OnCore Vero X1 Golf Ball Review

OnCore Vero X1 Golf Ball

Like many other things in golf, prices of premium golf balls are skyrocketing. Fortunately, brands like OnCore Golf have entered the market with more affordable options that are designed with similar concepts to all of the big names that dominate the game. The OnCore Vero X1 ball is OnCore’s premium distance option. It features “enhanced perimeter-weighting” and a four-layer construction designed for high velocity and strong control. Geared toward intermediate to advanced players, the Vero X1 is available at $39.98 a dozen and comes in white, yellow, and neon green.

How Does it Feel?

Like a lot of distance balls, the OnCore Vero X1 has a slightly firmer feel. The Vero X1 is a four-piece ball featuring what they call a “nano-engineered transition layer”. This layers sits between the mantle and the thin urethane cover. The transition layer is designed to manage how the two other layers “interact” with each other ultimately dictating how the ball performs and feels. Overall, the Vero X1 feels firm, but not clicky, throughout the bag.

Off the Tee

One of the main appeals of OnCore’s Vero X1 is the enhanced perimeter weighting of the ball. This is designed to make the ball more accurate and easier to control. According to OnCore, this is achieved through a larger inner mantle which gives the ball a higher MOI. I know what this means in regards to golf clubs, but I imagine the concept is similar is similar in golf balls. The ball is less inclined to twist, or spin sideways, on “less square” strikes. Additionally, the Vero X1 is also supposed to be low spin off of the driver which also helps keep the ball under control while achieving more distance for players that don’t need higher spin to hold the ball in the air.

On the Approach

Not unlike tee shots, the OnCore Vero X1 is firm and fairly low spin on approach shots. I suppose players that are good at generating the spin they need with their irons into greens will be fine. Historically, I’m not one of those players. The Vero X1’s distance properties give me the flight and accuracy control I’m looking for. However, those same properties restrict my stopping powers into the green a bit, especially with longer irons. Of course, like any golf ball, this will vary among different players and skill sets quite a bit.

Around the Green

I tend to prefer a firmer ball on and around the greens. Definitely not clicky, but something with a little presence, response, and pop to it. Soft enough to feel smooth, firm enough to give you precise face awareness whether it’s off a wedge or a putter. The OnCore Vero X1 fits that profile fairly well. For me, this is everything for my distance control as I’m very much a “sight and feel” player around the green.

In terms of little wedge shots around the green, the Vero X1 matches up with the experiences provided above. Players that are really able to zip the ball around the greens will likely be fine. I’ve just never been that wedge player (no matter how hard I yell at the ball to bite). For me, there was a little more roll from its firmer properties. I could get the Vero X1 to check and slow up, but my wedge game wasn’t good enough to get those sharp, abruptly-stopping grabs on the green.

Final Thoughts – OnCore Vero X1 Golf Ball

For $40, the OnCore Vero X1 is a consistent distance golf ball for players that like a firmer feel. With ball prices soaring, this price point is becoming difficult to navigate and extremely limited in terms of premium golf balls. So I feel that any time a new contender enters the mix and there are more solid options, it’s a great thing for all golfers. Plus, a little competition makes everyone better, right?

Also adding to their value, OnCore offers a loyalty program. Their tiered loyalty program provides discount levels, military discounts, and referral points. This program extends as long as you keep up your involvement with OnCore and you remain at whatever tier you reach as long as you’re an OnCore customer.
