Revo Black Sunglasses Review

Revo Black Sunglasses

In 1985 a NASA astrophysicist and optical engineer named Mitch Ruda had a crazy idea. While working on a project for NASA, he thought to himself “what if we used the same coatings we use to protect satellites to protect our eyes?” The next step was to take those coatings used to protect satellite portholes from space radiation and put them on a pair of glasses to protect the eyes. Thus Revo was born. Almost 40 years later and the commitment to innovation is just as strong and resulting in the new Revo Black sunglasses lineup.

Featuring a new polarized photochromic lens option that’s lightweight and impact resistant, the lens technology in the Black lineup automatically lightens and darkens based on lighting conditions. Made up of only the finest materials, the Black lineup of sunglasses is designed to keep your eyes protected and give you enhanced clarity. Revo Black is currently available in four different styles. The model pictured here is the Freestyle by Bode Miller featuring an ultra-lightweight carbon fiber frame. All styles are designed to be lightweight, comfortable, and technically advanced.

The Looks

Obviously looks will depend on which pair of shades you go with from the Revo Black lineup, but there are solid options for all tastes. I elected to go with the Freestyle by Bode Miller because I thought the athletic, aviator-inspired wrap-around style would be a good fit for my everyday use as well as on the golf course. Something about them reminds me of that 80s/90s ski-lodge style, and I’m a sucker for it. The shiny black frames and mirrored Evergreen photochromic lenses give them an updated contemporary look that I really dig. This style is a bit on the larger side in terms of face coverage so keep that in mind. If you like a more minimalist style, check out the wire-frame Air 1 and Air 2 models.

Comfort Level

If there’s one thing I’ve found Revo to excel at, it’s comfortable sunglasses. The new Black lineup specifically focuses on lightweight frames, but the Freestyle in particular is extremely lightweight. By utilizing a carbon fiber frame, the Freestyle is light on your head which goes a long way over 18 holes! Speaking of a long wear over 18 holes, eye fatigue is a very real thing. At least it is for me. Revo’s premium lenses always feel really natural and my eyes don’t have to “work” to deal with a bright day. Maybe it’s just me, and I’m totally willing to believe it’s a weird “me” thing, but relaxed eyes makes a huge difference when it comes to comfort with glasses.

On-Course Performance

Performance for sunglasses will be relative to what you’re using them for, obviously. Since this is a golf website, we’ll focus on how well these Revo Black sunglasses performed for golf. I generally prefer wrap-around sunglasses for golf because they give your eyes full coverage and also keep your peripheral vision consistent. There’s nothing worse than a shaded look over the ball, but there’s bright light coming in from the sides. A wrap-around will prevent that. Then on those windy days, you’ll get less debris in your eyes because of the added coverage. Keeping pollen, dust, sand, etc out of your eyes is a nice advantage in golf, in my opinion.

The star of Revo’s new Black lineup is the aforementioned polarized photocromic lens. Think about those days where it isn’t super sunny, but you still feel like you need a little extra eye protection. Those super dark shades in your bag are overkill. Then the next day, it’s super bright outside and you need as dark of a lens as possible. Oh no, now you have one of those weird days where it’s super bright, but then the sun ducks away for awhile before blindingly reemerging again. If only there was the perfect lens… There is! Revo’s photochromic lenses are crystal clear for great clarity and adjust to the outside brightness levels. These guys easily make some of the best lenses in the game and they translate over to the golf course perfectly.
