Seed Golf Pro SD-01 Golf Ball Review

Seed Golf Pro SD-01 Golf Ball

Seed Golf is a brand I recently stumbled upon during a trip to one of the local brand’s HQ where they said, “hey, we have a friend in the biz that’s doing a new ball if you want to check it out” and they sent me home with a box of the Seed Golf Pro SD-01 balls.  What I learned is that Seed was a new competitor in the straight-to-consumer ball market.  They want to make a high-performance ball available to consumers at a much lower cost.  In fact, my favorite line they use is “Tour spin and feel.  Lake ball price.”  Funny and relatable, which is right up my alley.

The Pro SD-01 is 3-piece ball that has plenty of distance and zips from 100 yards and in due to its cover.  Oh, and a dozen balls is only roughly $27.

How Does it Feel?

The Pro SD-01’s cover is made of a soft “cast” urethane cover designed for spin into the green and a smooth feel.  I’m going to shoot you straight; feel is usually the first place I notice a difference between a “Tour ball” and the “value straight-to-consumer” balls.  In the case of Seed Golf’s Pro SD-01, the feel was not only really good, but I found it very impressive.  It was firm enough off the woods, soft off irons, and just right on wedges and the putter.  There’s enough softness there to feel some compression, but enough firmness for good response and a little pop.  More importantly, the feel was consistent through the whole box of balls.  I’m sure many of you know what I’m talking about there from experiences where that unfortunately isn’t always the case.

Off the Tee

I will openly admit that I think this ball excels more from the second shot and in, but the Seed Pro SD-01 more than holds its own off the tee just fine.  The ball felt great off the face and it was easy to control.  Additionally, the Pro SD-01 had plenty of distance and worked its way through the wind with no problem.  I will give this ball a firm tip of the cap off the tee.  It’s solid.

Approach 7

On the Approach

Now we’re heatin’ up.  Approach shots might be the highlight of Seed Golf’s Pro SD-01.  The three-piece construction gives you a great feel of compression on a well struck iron.  The flight was penetrating, but there was plenty of grab on the greens.  In fact, the stopping power was impressive all the way through a standard 6 iron shot.  Shaping shots and adjusting trajectory was also easily controlled without a fight.  These characteristics make for a reliable ball when you need to find those greens in regulation.  In short, the Seed Pro SD-01 more than holds up with many of its premium competitors when it comes to the approach game.  A firm tip of the cap AND a firm approving nod on the approach shot performance.

Around the Green

Much like the approach shots, the Seed Golf Pro SD-01 shines on pitch and chip shots.  The ball is very controllable and you can get plenty of bite if you have that shot in your bag.  It won’t miraculously make you start zipping the ball, but even a player like me that’s just recently started to rediscover their wedge game should be able to get the ball to stop and hop.

Putting is one area that gets subjective quickly when it comes to evaluating a golf ball.  In fact, many golfers start with putting before they even consider the ball for the rest of their game.  For me, I found the Pro SD-01 to be very consistent on the greens.  Soft enough to maintain control of the ball, but enough pop to get the ball rolling.  If I had to put it somewhere on a spectrum of putting firmness, I’d say it’s slightly above average without feeling clicky whatsoever.

Final Thoughts – Seed Golf Pro SD-01 Golf Ball

This new world of “value golf balls” has absolutely blown up over the last ten years or so.  With so many claims of “just as good as a Pro V1” and the accompanying 50% less price tags, it’s a hard buzz to ignore.  Frankly, I’ve tried plenty of the balls out there that make these claims.  Some are impressive, some are fine, and some are nowhere near as good as claimed.  That said, the Seed Golf Pro SD-01 is one of the best “value balls” I’ve used.  It feels great, consistently performs, and holds up with a large portion of its premium competition.  More importantly, I feel confident in counting on the ball out on the course for every shot.

I had not heard of this one but sounds good. I really like the look on it too!

I have to say that although the SD-01 performed well the overall sound and feel was very firm and clicky and not what i was expecting especially with chip shots and with the putter. I will give it a chance and see how it performs but initial feeling is a little disappointing.
