Sub 70 959X Fairway Wood Review

Sub 70 959X Fairway Wood

The Sub 70 959X fairway wood is built for players who want speed, versatility, and shot-shaping control without sacrificing forgiveness. As the next evolution of Sub 70’s popular 939X and 949X fairway woods, the 959X incorporates new Cross Flow Face technology, expanded use of carbon fiber, and a fully adjustable hosel to deliver serious performance. Designed with input from Sub 70’s professional staff, it blends premium materials with Tour-level design features, yet still comes in at an appealing price.

The Looks

At address, the Sub 70 959X fairway wood balances traditional and modern design cues. The matte black carbon crown looks sharp and minimizes glare, while the lack of alignment aid keeps the crown clean and without distraction. Its slightly compact head shape frames the ball well and should appeal to both mid and low-handicap players. Flip it over, and the sole design reveals a tech-forward look with adjustable weights and clean branding that’s kept at a minimum.

I mentioned in my review of the 859 Pro driver that I’ve really appreciated Sub 70’s commitment to clean branding on their woods. In a day and age where so many good looking clubs are plastered with buzzwords, neon paintfill, and branding all over them like a NASCAR, it’s really refreshing to see a brand commit to clean aesthetics that let the club’s contours and materials do the talking. Do I understand the value in making brand names visible and whatnot? Of course I do, but I still really appreciate the effort Sub 70 is making to deliver really clean looking golf clubs.

Feel 8

How Does it Feel?

The standout feature in the Sub 70 959X fairway wood’s feel is undeniably the new Cross Flow Face technology. Sub 70 designed this face with four ultra-thin sections of forged C300 steel, reinforced by internal cross bracing to maximize responsiveness at impact. The result is a face that feels hot and impressively stable across the entire hitting area. It’s a modern, engineered feel that’s fast, stable, and consistent.

Thanks to the three rear weights, there’s also very little twisting on mishits. That added stability reinforces the solid feel throughout the swing and at impact. With a high level of club head awareness, it’s easy to be consistent with your swing and reliably return a squared face to the ball.

How Does it Sound?

Crisp and confident. The Sub 70 959X fairway wood produces a mid-pitched “whack” on well-struck shots that complements the fast feel of the face. It’s reasonable to credit the Cross Flow Face technology for the solid, direct tone at impact. It’s neither too muted nor overly loud, landing in a satisfying sweet spot acoustically. On off-center strikes, the tone shifts subtly to something firmer and slightly more metallic, offering useful auditory feedback without being harsh on your hands and ears.

On-Course Performance

In a fairway wood review, I’d normally have a shot data chart in this section, however, for this review, I elected to test out a Sub 70 959X 5 wood rather than the traditional 3 wood. Like many golfers, I’ve been experimenting with replacing a 3 hybrid with a higher-lofted fairway wood. Something like a 6 or 7 wood to gain more height, control, and forgiveness into longer approaches or shorter tee shots.

To better fit that role, I adjusted the hosel to add loft so the club would play more like a 6 wood. While adding loft can sometimes result in a closed face angle, I used the included weight kit to put the 8g weight in the toe, and it introduced a soft fade to my higher launching hybrid alternative. The general rear weighting also deserves credit for helping the ball launch high and easily, even without having to swing aggressively. Fairway woods can often be difficult to get in the air and holding there for good carry, so this is definitely beneficial to those that need it.

The 959X also really balanced forgiveness with workability. Ball speed stayed strong across the face so I didn’t feel like I had to be perfect, and the adjustable weight system gave me meaningful control over my shot shape. I consistently got a flight with a shape I could trust, especially from the fairway or light rough.

Final Thoughts – Sub 70 959X Fairway Wood

The Sub 70 959X fairway wood delivers strong ball speed, adjustability, and shot-shaping capabilities without losing the forgiveness that most of us need in this part of the bag. With the addition of Cross Flow Face technology and a refined weighting system, Sub 70 has created a club that will perform well across a wide range of players.

While I tested the 5 wood in more of a 6 wood setup, it wasn’t hard to see how the performance would carry throughout the lineup. It was easy to launch, consistent, and full of easy distance. Factor in the clean aesthetics and reasonable pricing, and the 959X fairway wood quickly becomes a serious option for players looking to maximize value without giving up performance.
