Sub 70 Pro V2 Fairway Wood
A new club only gets added to the Sub 70 Golf lineup when it really has something to elevate the brand. The new Sub 70 Pro V2 fairway wood features a new dual face and other design elements that make it possibly the brand’s most innovative golf club to date. And as usual, the Pro V2 fairway wood is available at a killer price point for such a high-performing golf club.
The Looks
This isn’t the first time Sub 70 has used a carbon fiber crown on a fairway wood, but the new matte finish gives it a sweet “all business” vibe. Being geared toward the better player’s eye, the Pro V2 fairway has a fairly compact profile with a traditional “pear” shape. Though the face angle is more square, the club head still sits nicely behind the ball making you feel comfortable in being able to shape your shot as well as hitting a tried and true straight bullet.
Flip the club over and the stealthy trend continues. The black paintfill on the matte black finish is super clean. This look makes all of the visible technology a little more subtle. Of course, you can’t miss the adjustable weights. Included with the Pro V2 fairway wood is a weight kit allowing you to adjust the swing weight and location of the center of gravity (CG). Wherever you place the heavier weight is where the CG will be located. Forward in the head should result in a lower launch and lower spin. The rear position should result in a little more spin and easier launch, as well as more forgiveness.
How Does it Feel?
There’s A LOT to unpack in this section. Out of the gate, I’m going to classify feel in a way I don’t think I ever have on this website. The Sub 70 Pro V2 fairway wood is a real striker. It just strikes the ball with such precision and strength while leaving zero doubts behind. I’ve tested this club multiple times with multiple different shafts, and this characteristic has been my biggest takeaway each time. There’s so much force behind a well-struck shot that really gives the club a strong sense of pop. I will say that this is a club geared toward better ball strikers so shots away from the center will have a less rewarding feel.
Sub 70’s innovative Dual Face technology is the major contributor to Pro V2’s feel mentioned above. The front/first face is made out of a 455 steel that’s thinner at the edges and 2.1mm thick at the center. Immediately behind the first face is a TPE resin material which fills the space between the front face and the second face. The second face is a constant 1.8mm thick face supported by two vertical columns. At impact, these three layers compress and create a pressure load (supported by those vertical posts) that results in a “reboud affect” for more ball speed. Though we’re talking about compression and TPE resins, I promise you that the impact still feels very solid and responsive.
Lastly, there are two adjustable weights on the sole of the club. Placing the heavier weight in the rear position will make the Pro V2 fairway wood feel more balanced and a little easier to control. By placing the weight forward, the club feels easier to shape your shot with, but a bit less forgiving.
How Does it Sound?
The Sub 70 Pro V2 fairway wood has a solid and precise sound to match the feel of the club. All of the materials combine for a firm and controlled “whap”. I wouldn’t say it’s overly metallic as the carbon fiber crown helps control that. Additionally, the TPE resin from the Dual Face technology dampens the sound so it’s not too loud. Overall, the Sub 70 Pro V2 fairway wood’s sound is precise and direct without screaming out for attention.
On-Course Performance
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Launch Angle | Spin | Carry (Yds) | Total (Yds) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
110.6 | 158.2 | 14.6º | 2835 | 259 | 265.1 |
So, it turns out that the Sub 70 Pro V2 fairway wood is a bit of a rocket launcher. It really is. To say the Dual Face technology really adds a lot of speed would be an understatement. Once I developed a feel for the club head and was able to consistently find the sweet spot, the ball was really jumping. When you take a look at the data above, keep in mind that I was testing a 16.5º 4 wood. These kinds of numbers are consistent with a traditional 3 wood for me. The flight was powerful and piercing with a rise to a nice apex without ballooning.
Workability is a key feature of the Pro V2 fairway wood as well. Though this club is designed to be fast, it’s also for the player that needs to flight and shape their shots. This is fairly natural for the V2 assuming you know how to hit these shots, and the previously mentioned adjustable weights go will also play a role. With the CG forward in the head, it’s easier to shape your shots both directions, but it may be harder to get the ball in the air. Personally, I preferred the weight in the rear position. I found this made the Pro V2 easier to control and I could still manipulate the ball. A good player will still be able to launch it lower even with the heavier weight back. It just won’t take a fight and a ton of club speed to get the ball off the ground.
Final Thoughts – Sub 70 Pro V2 Fairway Wood
Featuring the innovative Dual Face technology, the Sub 70 Pro V2 fairway wood is certainly one powerful club. Its innovative Dual Face technology delivers impressive ball speeds, while the adjustable weights allow for fine-tuning of launch and shot shapes. The clean aesthetics and solid feel further enhance the overall experience. As a more “player” fairway wood, golfers with a consistent swing will find the Pro V2 fairway wood to be a weapon off the tee or deck. As usual, Sub 70 offers a wide range of custom shaft and grip options so you can dial in the Pro V2 just where you want it. For golfers seeking a powerful fairway wood at a competitive price, the Sub 70 Pro V2 deserves a serious look.
