SuperSpeed Golf Training System Review

SuperSpeed Golf Training System

I’ve been following the SuperSpeed Golf Training System since it was released a few years ago, so I was excited to give it a go.  SuperSpeed claims to be the #1 overspeed training system out there and a surefire way to increase clubhead speed.  Sold.  We’ll take all the help we can get…

SuperSpeed – The Basics

The SuperSpeed Golf Training System consists of three weighted “clubs.”  One light, one medium, and one heavy club.  More importantly, it comes with a specific training protocol designed to increase your swing speed by 5% within 4-6 weeks.  For an everyday Hero, that can mean as much as 20-30 yards.  Sign me up.

Nearly 600 touring pros have given it a try – even guys like Phil – who have seen some big gains and are hitting BOMBS again.  If you follow the PGA Tour as much as we do (especially when they’re crushing it at the range), you’ll see plenty of players with their distinctive SuperSpeed Golf sets leaning on their bags.

Overspeed Training

The SuperSpeed Golf Training System relies on the concept of Overspeed Training.  I’ll spare you much of the details, but it’s a proven method of training the body and the brain to operate at different, faster speeds.  Basically, your brain expects your muscles to swing a golf club at a certain speed.  By “tricking it” with a lighter version of a golf club, you’re going to be able to create the same motion, but faster.  The theory is that your brain will adapt to the new faster speed, thus allowing you to see gains.

SuperSpeed has some great educational resources on their site.  They host webinars, training sessions, and a created detailed schedule to follow for both the short and long term.  SuperSpeed has even collected so much data, they can accurately predict how much YOUR speed will improve, nearly week by week.

First Impressions 5

First Impressions

First off, these things look great right out of the box.  The three clubs feel solid when you wiggle them and have a durable and attractive finish.  They’re easy enough to carry around, just make sure you have a bag to comfortably accommodate them.  (Here is some helpful guidance in bag selection.)

The first thing I recommend is getting acclimated to SuperSpeed’s training protocols and schedules.  Their protocols are fairly regimented, so make sure you’re finding a regular time to do these.  Technique becomes very important too, so watch SuperSpeed’s excellent videos to learn how to use them properly and not hurt yourself.  As you read on, I’ll walk you through my experience going through SuperSpeed’s first level of training.

Week 1 18

Week 1 – Level 1 Protocol

The SuperSpeed Golf creators tell you to warm up properly before jumping into the training protocols, and I agree it’s a must.  You’re doing legit athletic training here, not just “golf practice.”  You will be doing three sets with each of the three weighted clubs, swinging lefty and righty.  The goal is to swing as fast – not as hard – as you can.  The whole routine should take 10-20 minutes, depending how intense you want to go at it.  You’re going to get tired and work up a sweat, so get used to it!

The first week was all about finding the right time in the day, then making sure I’m following the protocols properly.  This is fun, and it truly does work.  First impression – you can totally rip it with the lightest club (green, and approximately 10% lighter than standard drivers) and it’s super fun.  You start to imagine that you’ll be flying it 285 in no time.  I also have to say, swinging from the opposite side is a really strange feeling, especially when you’re going for speed.  Lefties are weird.  Just saying.

Week 2

After the first couple sessions (SuperSpeed recommends starting with three days a week, with one day in between) you start getting used to the challenge of the routine.  You now notice different “golf muscles” working.  At this point I also started to feel a bit more control with this exaggerated swing, even though I’m giving it the fastest swing my rickety ol’ bones can produce.

I got my first round of actual golf in during week 2 of the program.  Of course, not a huge sample size, but I had a good driving day.  Not sure if I had more “speed” yet, but there was a lot of solid contact and fairways hit.  The SuperSpeed team often sees people achieve some instant results.  They even offer workshops in select cities that they say can help you get 20-yard gains in just two days!

Week 3

Didn’t touch the things.  I often whine about my fragile and temperamental old back, and this week, I was not too enthusiastic about swinging golf things as fast as I can.  Am I a candidate for the same fusion surgery Tiger had?  Who knows.  He came out swinging faster than he did before, so I may just go for it proactively.

The SuperSpeed folks understand we’re not all finely-tuned pro athletes.  SuperSpeed recommends starting off where you left off, but adding a week to whatever protocol you were on before.

Week 4

Back at it.  This is a long-term commitment, so you’ll want to retain your focus.  Start back up and keep going.  What you now begin to notice is that speed in a golf swing, without a doubt, is about footwork.  Your feet are way more engaged than you’d think, and they’ll be sore after!  Considering you’re trying to “awaken” sources of new speed, you begin to be conscious of how your hips are moving.  I’ve definitely noticed that the faster you can rotate through the swing with your lower half, the easier your top half can move as well.

Week 5

Got a chance to play a bit during this week, so I was excited to show off my fancy new, faster golf swing.  Didn’t go so well.  Played poorly, and driving being the weak point of my game, I didn’t see many of my hard-earned gainz on this day.  That’s ok.  I kept at it.  I actually took a lesson during this week, and one thing the instructor tried to help me with was that “Rory Squat” move.  You’ve seen it.  The one where he gets phenomenal amounts of leverage from the ground that he uses to generate his incredible speed.  This is all the stuff that you can incorporate into the SuperSpeed Training System, and you definitely begin to feel it as a source of speed.

Side note for some data.  Unfortunately I don’t have regular access to a launch monitor.  When I get on a monitor, I generally clock in about 102-107 mph with my driver.  I did have a chance to measure my speed a few weeks into the SuperSpeed protocols, and I was seeing 105-109 mph or so.  As I get further into my “studies” here, I’ll likely buy a radar so I can test myself further, but at this point, I am seeing good things happening in my swing.  It helps, but staying dedicated to the program determines the long-term results.

Week 6

As I approached the last week of the six-week process, I had certainly been feeling like I was able to swing it faster.  I experienced my form improving and my strength increasing, and that’s the whole point.  There were even a few really solid driving rounds tossed in there too, which in the end, is the whole reason you put the effort in.

Final Thoughts 9

Final Thoughts – SuperSpeed Golf Training System

What I plan to do is to keep going with the SuperSpeed Golf Training System through the rest of the fall and see what I turn into.  The other DRH guys want to give it a try, so they’re all on deck.  I’ve gotten some positive results so far, so I’d bet they will too.

In the end, do you swing faster?  Yes, of course, and the science backs it up (for most athletes).  What I also feel strongly about is that dedicated, specific training programs work wonders.  Putting in the commitment to getting better at any given aspect of your game really does make an impact, and I feel this product can help you get there.
