SuperStroke Cross Comfort Grip
SuperStroke is well known for their oversized and non-tapered putter grip designs. Think of those early GIANT putter grips designed to take your hands and wrists out of the swing. You can’t forget them! Fast forward and the brand has evolved to have a well-rounded portfolio of different grip sizes and shapes both for putters AND “swing grips”. An interesting swing grip in the lineup is the SuperStroke Cross Comfort grip. Designed to be super soft, tacky, with a firm inner layer, the Cross Comfort is a unique offering in the market.
The Looks
There are five different color options within the SuperStroke Cross Comfort grip offerings. Depending on which size you select (undersize, standard, midsize, or oversized), the color options will differ. Most sizes will have the option of a black base with either blue or red branding. There are also two grey options available, but the grey and pink is only available in undersize.
I like that SuperStroke made this grip in black as it looks more like a traditional golf grip. The Cross Comfort texture is visible in the rubber with additional lines etched throughout the grip for added texture.
How Does it Feel?
I’ve historically found similar SuperStroke swing grips to have a somewhat bulky and muted feel. Grips like the Traxion Tour are good for players that like a dampened feel (read: less sting) in their hands, or might have hand arthritis. But maybe a player wants a little more precision in their feel. I felt the Cross Comfort had a similarly soft feel in my hands, but the shot feedback was much more present. I’m chalking that up to the firm inner rubber layer underneath the soft and tacky polyurethane top layer. Overall, the feel has a nice blend of soft relief with accurate response.
On-Course Performance
As I mentioned above, the SuperStroke Cross Comfort grip combines a soft polyurethane top layer with a firm rubber inner layer. That tacky polyurethane outer gives you great traction and feels good in your hands. Just make sure you keep them clean! The firmer inner layer of the grip not only gives you more feedback in your hands, but it also creates more “torsional stability”. This means the grip should help you better control the club as you put more torque on it. During my testing, I felt I was able to control the club easily and the grip held its ground on my hardest swings.
In terms of size, I tested the standard size option. While the Cross Comfort doesn’t feel exceptionally bulky, it still feels a touch larger. From a performance perspective, this made me grips the club a little looser and I swung it more freely. It was just enough to help me avoid the death grip, but not so much where I felt like I couldn’t turn the club over so I’d lose the ball right. I generally can’t quite take the next step up in grip size, so something like this might be a good compromise down the road if I feel that would benefit my swing.
Final Thoughts – SuperStroke Cross Comfort Grip
Choosing a grip is a highly-subjective process and will always come down to personal preferences. In my opinion, players who want to get that rubbery/tacky traction in their hands while maintaining a looser grip, the SuperStroke Cross Comfort is definitely something to consider. Most grips in that same space don’t have a ton of response in your hands at impact, but the Cross Comfort does a good job there as well. If this sounds appealing to you, you can always start small by testing on a few key clubs in your bag.
