TaylorMade 2017 M2 Driver Review

TaylorMade 2017 M2 Driver

The TaylorMade 2017 M2 driver had itself quite a successful run.  Along with a boatload of wins worldwide, the ’17 M2 was a key factor in two significant victories.  Those two victories were at the hands of Sergio Garcia at the 2017 Masters and with Justin Rose’s Gold Medal at the 2016 Olympics.  Yes, the ’17 M2 was clutch for professionals, but its basic technology and solid feel also made it a bit hit for the buying public worldwide.  Our review will tell you everything you need to know about one of TaylorMade’s most popular drivers of all time – the 2017 M2.

The Looks

In line with the rest of the 2016 and 2017 TaylorMade wood lineups, the 2017 M2 driver has the same white/carbon/black/neon yellow color scheme.  I could see where this look could be polarizing but I’ve thought it was pretty slick from Day 1.  Personally, I think the 2017 M2 lines and contours have much better flow to them than the 2016 line and is much more appealing behind the ball.

The TaylorMade 2017 M2 driver has a pretty standard contemporary driver shape.  Its shape is large enough to inspire confidence but with a medium footprint.  Again, in regards to the lines and contours, the ’17 M2 driver frames the ball very nicely.

How Does it Feel?

SOLID!  I’ve hit a lot of drivers over the years, but the TaylorMade 2017 M2 driver might be the most solid feeling driver I’ve ever hit.  To control sound and feel while maintaining performance, TaylorMade utilized a technology called “Geocoustic.”  On the surface, this tech was so TaylorMade could control the distribution of weight better which allowed them to manipulate the center of gravity of the driver.  The “sunken sole curvature” of the Geocoustic allowed TaylorMade to also control the sound and feel by stiffening the head as a whole.  The end result is that very solid feel with a lot of jump off the face.

How Does it Sound?

Much like the feel, the sound of the TaylorMade 2017 M2 driver sounds very firm and solid.  You won’t find the ’17 M2 driver to be the quietest driver on the range, but it’s not overly loud.  What you get is a firm “whack” that has a hint of metallic tone to it.  Shots off the heel and toe tend to sound a little dead, and the low face shot sounds extra firm.  They key is finding the generous sweet spot and your ears will tell you that you really popped one.

There’s quite a bit to be said about the simplicity of the TaylorMade 2017 M2 Driver.  Aside from the basic shaft adjustments, there aren’t a million different combinations of settings to tinker with.  A low center of gravity and weight positioned toward the rear of the head make the ’17 M2 driver pretty easy to get in the air and find a lot of carry.  Additionally, a well-fit M2 driver manages spin pretty well.  For a rear CG position, I’ll take 2410 rpm on my spin all day.  With this combination, as long as I make a decent swing, I’m getting a lot of carry and great roll.

In terms of workability and shot shaping, the M2 driver is fairly straightforward.  The club itself isn’t necessarily going to do the work for you, but if you are a good shot shaper, the M2 will stay out of your way and let you work the ball at will.  In the event you’re a straight ball hitter, the M2 will also do this just fine.  Just remember, there aren’t a bunch of bells and whistles to help balance out a poor swing path.  That said, the ’17 M2 is extremely forgiving with a generous sweet spot.  You won’t be punished for not hitting the very dead center of the face.

Final Thoughts

There’s a reason the TaylorMade 2017 M2 driver has been one of the most popular drivers of the past two years.  The M2 is a straightforward, basic driver that packs a lot of punch with great feel and forgiveness.  Of course, like always, we advise you to get properly fit.  Without sliding or movable weights, it’s that much more important to make sure you’re optimized to get the most out of the 2017 M2 driver.
