TaylorMade P730 Irons Review

TaylorMade P730 Irons

The TaylorMade P730 irons are the cleanest looking iron in their stable but it’s also the most demanding.  TaylorMade worked closely with their Tour pros to create a super compact blade iron with a perfect shape and exceptional feel.  These irons demand perfect ball striking, but if you have the game for it, you’ll reap the rewards of one of the best muscle backs among the major OEMs.

First Impressions

When I first spoke with TaylorMade about the P730 irons, they made it very clear that this iron was designed for their Tour staff first, retail second.  Once I finally saw the TaylorMade P730 in person I understood why.  Everything about the P730 looks like the ultimate ball striker’s club.  Thin toplines, thin soles, minimal offset, and a short head length from heel to toe.  Though TaylorMade attributes features from previous TPMB designs in the P730, it’s hard for me to see – and that’s a good thing.  The TaylorMade P730 is far and away the best looking iron they’ve made in years and stands by itself.  It’s going to be difficult for players that lack the game for the P730 to resist them based on looks alone.

How Does it Feel?

At the risk of sounding like a TaylorMade fanboy, the TaylorMade P730 feels exactly like a blade iron should feel like.  Shots off the sweet spot feel sliky smooth and the club clips perfectly through the turf.  When you get aggressive and really try to pinch the ball you feel a tight and powerful compression.  TaylorMade accomplished this through utilizing forged 1025 carbon steel with precision milled grooves.  Feedback through the hands is very precise and makes controlling the ball very reflexive.  The P730 is very easy to control through the swing which helps manage tempo and shot shaping.  There are a handful of great feeling muscle back irons that came out this season and the TaylorMade P730 is definitely one of them.

How Does it Sound?

The TaylorMade P730 irons sound exactly like what you’d expect them to at this point.  If you catch the ball perfectly, the sound is a muted “whap” that pronounces the compression of the ball.  The sound from the turf interaction is a very crisp clipping tone as long as you’re not digging trenches or hitting the bottom groove.  If you do mishit the ball, you can obviously expect a thinner and less pleasing tone.  To repeat myself again, if you’re a good match for these irons, you’re going to love the tones.

On-Course Performance

First and FOREmost (get it?), it’s important to remember the TaylorMade P730 irons are made for control and feel.  These irons are designed to help good iron players manipulate their golf ball as required.  With all of the elements previously mentioned in this review combined, the TaylorMade P730 makes for an extremely playable muscle back.  Whether it was hitting a low running punch or a big towering face, the P730 did it all.  That impeccable feel made me feel very in tune with the club and confident hitting all shots.  It’s important to remember though that these irons are from forgiving.  If you can’t consistently find the center of the face, don’t expect good results.  You must be a great ball striker to realize the full potential of the TaylorMade P730 irons.

Final Thoughts

When the TaylorMade Tour staff asked for a great blade, TaylorMade listened and delivered an exceptional muscle back in the P730.  To be honest, my expectations weren’t all that high going into testing but I was totally blown away by the P730.  I think it looks amazing and feels great.  Just remember, these irons were made with professionals in mind, not the majority of the golfing public.  That’s not to say there aren’t mortals that can hit them, but be realistic about your game.  Only a pure striker that can play well with small blades should consider the TaylorMade P730.  For those that don’t fit that bill, the rest of the TaylorMade P lineup is strong as well.
