TecTecTec KLYR Rangefinder Review

TecTecTec KLYR Rangefinder

TecTecTec has been a leader in the “value rangefinder” market with their strong performing devices at affordable price points. By keeping their designs simple, and cutting out much of the typical middle man “fluff” that drives up overhead, TecTecTec has focused on investing in technology and quality. The new super compact TecTecTec KLYR rangefinder (pronounced “clear”) is the perfect representation of these efforts. Everything you need, but nothing you don’t in a perfect little package. Most importantly, it performs great and might be the best rangefinder giant killer I’ve used.

Out of the Box

In every rangefinder review I’ve done on this site, I’ve stressed how much I value being able to open the box, pop in the battery, and be off and running. I don’t want to have to read a manual to know how a rangefinder works. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like the device should be intuitive and easy to use. Thankfully, the TecTecTec KLYR rangefinder is exactly that.

Inside the box, which is pretty slick in itself, you’ll find the KLYR rangefinder, a hardshell case, and a few accessories. The included accessories are the usual funny little rangefinder battery, a ball marker which attaches to the case via magnet, and a magnetic belt clip. Setup is as easy as throwing the battery in, choosing meters or yards via the mode button, and choosing to switch slope on or off. That’s it, you’re ready to hit the course.

Features

Like I said earlier, the TecTecTec KLYR has everything you need, nothing you don’t. There’s a switch on the side to turn slope on and off. When you switch slope on, there’s a yellow indicator so everybody knows. Flip the switch back, slope is turned off, and you’re tournament legal. The KLYR also features Target Lock which vibrates when you lock onto a target. Just hold the power button down, scan a scene, and the KLYR will vibrate when you hit the closest target between you and your backdrop.

The large black dot on the side of the KLYR is a strong magnet. You can use this to slap the rangefinder onto the pole/bar of the golf cart for easy access. The KLYR also attaches to the included belt clip if you want to carry it around that way. Should you choose to use the included ball marker and you’re just keeping the KLYR in the small compartment of the cart, you can just pop it onto the side of the rangefinder too. OR you can put the ball marker on the golf cart pole next to your rangefinder. Any steel surface is an option for both!

It’s also worth pointing out that the TecTecTec KLYR is available in three different colors. You can get it in the white color pictured here as well as black and a high-visibility yellow.

On-Course Performance

The basics of the TecTecTec KLYR such as quick response, accurate yardages, slope, and Target Lock are all reliable and accurate. I compared the KLYR to a handful of top-dollar rangefinders and it was right up there with them in all of these areas. So hat’s off to the KLYR, it immediately proves its value there.

There are two main areas where the KLYR really stood out to me in regards to how it sets itself apart from most other rangefinders in the “value” space of the market. First is the size. For some reason, it seems size is a major difference between affordable rangefinders and more premium options. Budget rangefinders always seem so HUGE to me. I’m sure this had something to do with production costs at some point, but I’d have to imagine improvements have been possible as the technology has evolved over the years. As such, TecTecTec got it right with the KLYR’s small profile that fits nicely in your hand and is easy to handle. Maybe I’m just being picky, but this is a big deal to me and earns the KLYR major points.

The second area where I usually notice the difference between value rangefinders and the premium competition is in the optics. Even with adjustable eye pieces, more affordable rangefinders tend to be less crisp and the displays are far less vibrant. TecTecTec, however, did an excellent job in this area too. The glass is quite clean, clear, and definitive. The black digital display is crisp and precise making it easy to see against all backdrops and quickly read the output. The TecTecTec KLYR easily has one of the best views I’ve seen in a sub-$200 rangefinder.

Final Thoughts – TecTecTec KLYR Rangefinder

This is the point in the review where I’d normally say, “this rangefinder is a good budget option that does the basics and is worth considering if you’re looking for a ‘good enough’ performer while saving a few bucks.” Well, truth be told, I think the TecTecTec KLYR is a great option no matter which price point you’re considering. When comparing the KLYR to many rangefinders I’ve used that cost two or three times as much, it performs just as well on the course. With the KLYR, I get premium performance and reliability without breaking the bank. Additionally, should you run into any issues, TecTecTec offers a two year warranty. If you’re asking me, the TecTecTec KLYR is sort of a no-brainer in today’s rangefinder market.
