Tiger Woods Scotty Cameron Putter

The Famous Tiger Woods Scotty Cameron Newport 2

There is no putter more famous in the game of golf than the Tiger Woods Scotty Cameron Newport 2.  Let’s just list its accomplishments real quick:

  • 15 Major Championships (including its 5th Masters following the 2019 victory)
  • 65 PGA wins
  • A mere $92 million dollars in winnings alone

It’s also the jewel of many collectors’ eye and the inspiration of many custom designs.  Well, Golfweek recently had the chance to talk with Tiger about this iconic putter and it’s total putter porn for the fellow golf nerds out there.  Fair warning, there aren’t really any great pictures of his putter in the article so have fun going down the Google rabbit hole.

Here’s how the storied Cameron got its signature trend-setting look with the cherry bombs:

Cameron built the putter, a heel-toe-weighted blade with a single dot on the topline. Woods thought the putter was a tiny bit too heavy – by a few grams – so Cameron mulled out material in the front and back of the putter head to reduce the overall weight and filled the dots with red paint – Woods’ signature color.

The reason the putter came into existence in the first place was because Tiger ran into a wall on the greens.  After going through a spell where he couldn’t break 70 in 17 rounds, Tiger reached out to Scotty and told him he wanted something more “square and angular” like his Ping as a kid.  The rest is history.  With the new putter in his bag, things quickly turned around in a big way.

Using it in competition for the first time at the Byron Nelson, Woods shot 61 in the first round – tied for his lowest score in his pro career – en route to a tie for seventh. He went on to win eight of his last 12 starts that year, including the 1999 PGA Championship. He added nine more wins in 2000, including victories in the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship.

The putter didn’t leave his bag for 11 years.

The rest of the article talks about how it went away, came back again, then went away again, but then came back.  It also talks about how it’s one of only two putters in the house that Tiger’s kids aren’t allowed to touch.  It’s a good, quick read if you’re into this kind of stuff like I am.  I strongly suggest checking out the article here.
