The Wedge Yips w/ Tommy

The Wedge Yips Strike Again!

Return of The Wedge Yips

We all remember the long, [supposedly] resolved issue of Bill’s run in with the wedge yips. Well, the yips have once again struck the team here at DRH, and this time I, Tommy, am the victim. It all started at the end of last year. I’m coming off of a hot Arizona summer that featured a ton of golf, resulting in both my lowest score and lowest handicap index ever (humble brag). With the holidays rolling in, and golf getting evermore expensive in Arizona as winter approaches, my round count started to decrease.

After a few weeks off, I finally got out on the course around early October. On the third or fourth hole of the day, I left myself a little 10 yard pitch shot. Easy up and down right? Wrong. Slid the club right under the ball, sending it 2 feet. Deep breath.  Reset. Bladed straight across the green. Oh no. Is it the yips? It can’t be. Just a bad hole. I proceeded to hit similar shots the rest of the round. Eh, just a bad day, right?  Again, wrong. For the next 3 months until today, I have proceeded to have an atrocious wedge game. Fat, thin, chili-dipped, skull-fu*ked, you name it, I’ll hit it.  Well all of it except “good”, I guess. It’s become a serious problem that’s costing me 5-10 shots a round.  My scores are in the toilet and I was considering just taking a break from golf altogether.

Can I Be Fixed?

What was my natural next step? Call (text) Bill and tell him how awful I am at golf. Of course, he agreed with me at first, but then suggested I reach out to his good pal, Andy Gorman, who helped him out with his wedge issues. So, Bill introduced Andy and I via email and we settled on a 30-day short game improvement plan to start.

I had an introductory call with Andy, and we’re going to be using the new platform he leverages for virtual lessons, Skillest. The platform allows you to upload videos for review and chat directly with your coach. In turn, your coach reviews your videos, marks them up, provides voice over instruction, and more! Andy offers a variety of lesson types, from single-video reviews to unlimited video upload memberships. I’ll make sure to report back on ease of use of the platform, different features, etc as well. You can take a sneak peak into Andy’s Skillest page HERE.

So over the next 30 days, I will be providing updates on my progress with the wedge yips, and we will see if Andy can help cure me like he did Bill. Stay tuned!
