TimberTouch Putterworks Woodford Putter Review

TimberTouch Putterworks Woodford Putter

Golfers are notorious for having a deep passion for the game’s gadgets and interesting pieces of equipment. Whether it’s some fancy training aid designed to solve your dreaded a slice or a one-off putter that you finally took the leap to get custom made, golfers love going all out and having a story to tell. TimberTouch Putterworks out of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin has just the product for the golf gear junky in their high-end line of putters made completely out of wood. There’s something for everyone from the high-MOI mallet TimberTouch Putterworks Woodford to their wide-body Bladewood putter.

TimberTouch Putterworks putters are much more than just stylish wooden putters that belong in a man cave. Each putter has been meticulously designed and tested using CAD software before being CNC’d out of premium hard and exotic woods. While these putters certainly have an artistic appeal, they’re also highly functional as a true gamer.

The Looks

Where do I even begin? There’s only so much I can say to tell the story of TimberTouch Putterworks and their looks. All of the different combinations of woods and laser etching provide a seemingly endless possibility of appearances across TimberTouch’s lineup. (I strongly encourage you to take a look at their website to get a true feel for the aesthetic.) The TimberTouch Putterworks Woodford putter pictured here has a wide round shape. I would say it’s sort of a crescent mallet, but the elongated trailing edge gives it a little more of a point. From address, I get strong vintage Chris Chraft speedboat vibes from this putter.

Should you not see something that appeals to your tastes, TimberTouch Putterworks also offers custom putters. You can select from different types of wood, what you want laser engraved, different grips, or even a matte black shaft.

Feel 3

How Does it Feel?

Summarizing the feel of the TimberTouch Putterworks Woodford putter is somewhat complicated. It’s tough because I can’t say there’s anything else out there that I’m aware of that feels anything like this putter. From a balance perspective, the Woodford has a higher MOI so it’s nice and controlled. There’s a lot of stability and the head tracks easily throughout the stroke.

The combination of the CNC-milled wooden face and a big block of wood behind it is where the intrigue sets in. There’s definitely a muted characteristic at impact. I’m assuming wood will naturally absorb vibration more than metal will. That said, there’s certainly response/feedback from the face at impact. You definitely know exactly where on the face you’re striking the ball. Again, it’s tough to explain. The softness is nothing like a urethane insert putter, but definitely much softer than any metal putter you’re doing to come across. TimberTouch Putterworks has delivered a unique feeling putter which you’ll be hard pressed to find anything else similar to in the market.

How Does it Sound?

The TimberTouch Putterworks Woodford’s sound matches up really well with the feel. Although the feel is in a place between metal and a urethane insert, I would say the sound is more in line with a firmer insert putter. Impact on the sweet spot makes a “tack” sound. You don’t have to worry about the sound being too loud as it’s pronounced enough to give you the feedback you’re looking for, but not so loud that it’s overwhelming. Like most putters, as you gravitate toward the ends, the sound will firm up and get more clicky.

On-Course Performance

TimberTouch Putterworks generally designs their putters for firm and fast greens as they believe their primary clientele will mostly being playing on these types of surfaces. Ideally, TimberTouch’s putters won’t be as fast and will skid less for a true and more controlled roll. The roll itself is nice and true as long as you make a good stroke and find the center of the face. I would say that my speed with the Woodford is relative in the sense that I adjusted to how the ball comes off of the face and how hard I need to hit it on different surfaces. I could see where there’s a little “headroom” where you can give the putter a firmer tap without having the ball take off on you and that would be helpful on ritzy, glassy greens.

One thing to point out is that performance will likely be a bit subjective depending on how you acclimate to the feel.

Final Thoughts – TimberTouch Putterworks Woodford Putter

As I’m sure you can imagine, I own a lot of golf stuff. The amount of putters alone is out of control. All of that to say, I don’t own anything quite like this TimberTouch Putterworks Woodford putter. Yeah, there were plenty of wood putter options from the Hickory and Persimmon eras, but nothing I’ve tried has been quite like the Woodford.

Do I think it’s going to replace everyone’s Scotty Cameron, Odyssey, or Ping? Of course not, but I do think these TimberTouch Putterworks putters are one of the more compelling wooden putters I’ve seen from the modern era. More often than not, when I’ve seen similar putters at golf shows, they’re just a fancy novelty. Sure, the TimberTouch putters share in some of that novelty, but they’re legitimately functional putting instruments that perform well. And let’s be honest, these putters do cost a little bit more. For the investment you’re making, actually being able to get some practical on-course use will go a long way. One thing you can be certain of is that you’ll have one of the most interesting putters you’re going to see anytime you step on the course.
