While the golf season may be winding down in Chicago for Bill and Jon, I recently moved to Arizona, so prime (aka expensive) golf season is just starting for me. And with the start of a new golf season (and the finishing of the “offseason” testing), come some big changes to my bag. The brand to make the biggest appearance into my bag this year? Srixon. If you’ve read my reviews of any of their latest stuff, you’ll know why. So, what’d I change? Let me tell you in the latest Tommy’s 2021 bag setup!
Tommy’s 2021 Bag Setup
Driver and Woods
Now I know nobody follows super intently on my WITB, so allow me to give you some insight. I’ve been gaming the Ping G400 Max since it came out, and my god, it was the most forgiving driver I have ever hit. It was decently long but man it went straight. Nothing could kick it out of the bag. Enter the LA Golf Shafts Trono shaft. I put that bad boy in a Taylormade SIM Max and I couldn’t miss. That, and I gained a solid 20 yards over the G400 Max. I had tried the SIM Max previously and it was good, but with the Trono it was absurd. Should I have tried the Trono in the G400 Max? Probably, but the SIM Max and Trono combo was so good, it went straight into the bag, and it’s not going anywhere any time soon. (We always say that, I know.)
In addition to the SIM Max, I added a SIM TI 4 wood to the bag to match. I didn’t like the launch and spin of the 4 wood, so I threw the low-spinning Ventus Blue into a SIM TI 3 Wood, dialed up the loft and, voilla, it’s a bomber from the fairway and the tee.
All New Irons
I’ve always been a “club ho” when it comes to all aspects of my game, especially in the irons department. Well, this year I’ve put in some contenders that should stick around for awhile. After going through some P790s, a few combo sets of Mizunos, and PXGs, I have finally settled on a Srixon ZX7 and ZX5 combo set. If you read my review of either of them (ZX7 or ZX5) you’ll know why these are in my bag. They look amazing and they perform even better. A+ from Srixon.
And it doesn’t stop there. Even better than the ZX5 and 7s, if that’s possible, is theZX Utility. Off of the tee, this thing is a fairway finder. Long, high, and straight, can’t ask for anything more.
Short Game Switch Ups
After gaming a variety of wedges the last few years, mixing up brands, lofts, etc. I’ve decided to go with a more uniform setup: the Vokey SM8. I felt that from top to bottom, the Vokeys were consistent, had great feel, and were predictable. Not to mention our friends at Club Champion hooked me up with some custom stamping from ‘The Office’. They’ll be in the bag until I wear them out.
My putting is probably the biggest Club Ho portion of my bag. I switch putters and grips like a madman. This offseason I did a putter fitting and was between a Taylormade Spider X and an Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas. I started with the Spider, and my putting definitely improved, however the inconsistencies off of the face due to the insert (with some putts coming off ridiculously hot out of nowhere), I switched to the Las Vegas. My distance control has gotten better and my short putting is great. Time will tell which stays in the bag, but for now I’m hanging on to both.
The coolest part of my entire bag? MyScott Readman Conceptsputter cover. I’m a huge Banksy guy (yeah, yeah so are most people), and our pals over at Scott Readman Concepts hooked me up with a ‘Girl with the Red Balloon’ Cover to match some ink I have permanently etched on my body.
Want one similar? Reach out to SRC, they’re awesome to work with.
The Ball
Of all of the things I change in my bag, the Pro V1 I’ve used for years has been the only thing that hasn’t changed. Do I have the game/need to play a Pro V1? Absolutely not. Am I an absolute head case so play poorly when I switch up the ball? Absolutely yes. Now I’ve tried other balls over the years but I always go back to old reliable. Well, old reliable has changed. This season I’ve been firmly gaming the new Srixon Z Star ball. It’s just so dang good. I even played it side by side with the Pro V1, and the Srixon wins for me in almost every category. This was the last thing I expected to change, but alas, here we are. I’m a Srixon ball guy now.
Final Thoughts
I’ve changed basically everything in my bag. No surprise there, we’re golf bloggers who test all sorts of equipment throughout the year. With my bag, nothing is ever safe! However, with this setup here, I’m more confident in my game than ever, and it’s going to take some quality stuff to even attempt to kick any of this out of the bag….except maybe the putter, we’ll see on that one.
Hey,
Late to the party on this one but where did you blend your ZX5/ZX7 combo? For myself, I’m thinking Zx5 4-6 and zx7 7-pw but curious what you (or others) may have done. I’m also considering the zx4 at 4i for the extra launch/forgiveness. Also, did you stick with the modus 105 shafts?
Cheers,
Mark
Hey Mark –
I went
ZX Utility 3 iron
Zx5 4-7
Zx7 8-pw
I stuck with the modus for awhile then went to my Oban CT115 after a few months not bc the modus were bad, I just missed the feel of the Obans.
Such good clubs. Enjoy.
