Tour Edge Exotics EXS Pro Driver
The Tour Edge Exotics EXS Pro driver: the best driver David Glod has ever made. Simple as that. I haven’t even hit all of the drivers from Tour Edge’s history, but I don’t need to. I’m right. From the perfect shape to the adjustability, low launch, and low spin, the EXS Pro driver is everything the better golfer could ask for. This driver is also a limited edition coming “straight off the Tour Van” with only 1000 being made available to the public. And at $400, you’ll have a hard time finding a better value in a premium driver.
The Looks
I’m going to tell you right now, pictures don’t do the Tour Edge Exotics EXS Pro driver justice. While there are plenty of great looking drivers out right now, the EXS Pro might have the best profile of the 2020 driver market. (I have the texts from when I got it to prove it.) The head is more compact at 440cc with a perfect classic pear shape. A deeper face lends itself to the traditional look while also helping keep the spin down. As classic as the EXS Pro looks, the black carbon crown reminds you that this is very much a modern club.
The sole of the club gives you another glimpse at some carbon fiber in the toe section of the club. Not only does it look sweet, but it has a functional purpose as well. By using the lighter weight material, Tour Edge is able to more strategically place weight in other locations to optimize the Center of Gravity (CG). Of course, you’ll also see the Flight Track weighting system on the perimeter. This allows you tune your shot shape depending on where you set the weight.
How Does it Feel?
Tour Edge once again used their new Diamond Face Technology in the EXS Pro driver which was introduced to in the EXS 220 driver. Diamond Face tech essentially creates mini trampolines behind the face through the use of 33 diamond shapes of varying sizes across the back of the face. This makes the driver both sweeter across the face and longer by creating more ball speed at impact. The end result is a solid feel with a lot of pop. Good shots feel like they absolutely jump off the face.
As the EXS Pro driver is designed for the better player with a faster swing speed, it’s important to remember it has a low and forward CG. If you’re anything like me, then you are going to notice that in the feel because the club’s balance changes. The faster your swing speed, the less you’ll notice it. Mind you, this isn’t a negative, just something to be aware of. If you have the speed, you’ll love the feel for strong ball control off the tee.
How Does it Sound?
Like the other EXS metalwoods for 2020, the Tour Edge Exotics EXS Pro driver also has the new Sound Diffusion Bar (S.D. Bar). This bar is used to finely tune the acoustics of the driver head. The concept is similar to the way a music venue would use special paneling to enhance the sound in the room. The end result is Tour Edge’s best sounding driver they’ve ever made with a great tone that you’d expect from a premium driver. When you catch one pure, the sound is a mid-range firm “whap“ similar to the EXS 220 driver. The biggest difference is that the EXS Pro sounds a little more solid and direct due to its smaller head.
On-Course Performance
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Launch Angle | Spin | Carry (Yds) | Total (Yds) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
115.6 | 171.1 | 9.7º | 2364 | 281.8 | 310.9 |
Let me start this section by stating that the Tour Edge Exotics EXS Pro driver performs exactly as advertised and it’s an animal. The stock shot is a nice piercing bullet with low spin that’s quite capable of spin numbers below 2000 rpms. Remember, the EXS Pro is designed for a faster swinging player. Having a generally faster swing speed will be helpful in achieving optimal launch with the EXS Pro head. If you have speed but need a little assistance in trajectory, you can tune the loft via the adjustable hosel for more launch.
With the Flight Track weight in the “stock neutral” position, I found my shot staying low and leaking right on me. Not a slice, but not an ideal ball flight for me by any means. I typically don’t like to mess with perimeter weights for feel reasons, but in this case, I just slid the 6-gram weight a bit toward the heel for a draw bias. Just like that, my shot straightened out and I had that straight, piercing ball flight I was looking for. If you want to fine tune flight and performance further, a weight kit with additional weight options will be available for purchase.
I did lose some carry with the lower launch and low spin of the EXS Pro, but it was still plenty and I got extra rollout for good total yardage. Pounding missiles down the fairway that would run forever is a great combination for distance as well as managing the wind. Oh, and should I ever feel I need a little more carry, see my earlier point regarding adjusting loft via the hosel for a higher launch.
Final Thoughts – Tour Edge Exotics EXS Pro Driver
Tour Edge has consistently impressed with their metalwoods over the past few years. The Exotics EXS Pro driver is, in my mind, one of the best woods that Tour Edge has ever delivered to the market. I can’t stress enough how perfect the shape of this club is. The EXS Pro driver has a timeless look with the modern touch of the carbon crown. Add in a powerful low launch, low spin, excellent sound, and incredible feel, you get one premium performer. While other drivers in this class can cost you anything from $500-$700, you can get this “straight from the Tour Van” driver for $400! There are only 1000 being made available to the public. At this price point, the EXS Pro is an incredible value for a legitimate premium driver that more than holds up with the best of them.
