UST Mamiya Quantum Speed Shaft Review
UST Mamiya’s introduction of the Quantum family is their latest offering of a premium lightweight option that provides strong stability without sacrificing feel. Players with higher swing speeds would likely turn to the sleek purple Quantum shaft (reviewed here!), but players seeking ultra-low weights, lighter flexes, and more speed may be interested in the UST Mamiya Quantum Speed shaft. With its lighter profile, players with lower swing speeds may be able to find a bit of extra speed and an easier time getting the ball in the air for more carry. This is achieved through a combination of high-modulus carbon fibers, including T1100G, to optimize the balance of feel and performance.
Since this shaft is definitely not geared toward my swing, I worked with a player more appropriate for testing.
The Looks
Like its purple counterpart, the UST Mamiya Quantum Speed features a primarily chromed-out finish that runs the length of the midsection through the tip. The handle section is a vintage gold color, reminiscent of a 70s metal flake. Of course, there is also the Quantum graphic in the midsection, with the shaft specs displayed in small black print.
Specs are noted in UST Mamiya’s “secret code.” Flexes range from 3F1 to 4F3, with F1 representing light flex and F3 indicating stiff. The specs with a “3” before the flex denote a weight in the 30-gram range, while a “4” indicates the 40-gram range. UST Mamiya optimizes the Quantum’s launch based on the weight and flex of the shaft.
How Does it Feel?
Keep in mind that I worked with another player for testing. Feel is highly subjective and influenced by personal attributes and experiences. My tester doesn’t have the most aggressive swing, but he’s capable of firing it a little harder when needed. He felt confident stepping on the UST Mamiya Quantum Speed without losing control. This is a testament to the shaft’s focus on stability, thanks to toughened resins and high-end carbon fibers. Additionally, the feedback and club awareness remained clean and responsive.
One comment my tester made was that these types of shafts often feel either too brittle or too loose. After adjusting to the lightweight platform, he felt the Quantum Speed offered a great balance of “life” and “robustness,” giving him confidence on every swing.
On-Course Performance
Club Speed | Ball Speed | Launch Angle | Spin | Carry (Yds) | Total (Yds) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
93.3 | 140 | 17.6º | 2733 | 225.8 | 231.8 |
The main things we focused on during testing the UST Mamiya Quantum Speed were club speed, launch, carry yardage, and dispersion. On paper, a lighter shaft should make it easier for the golfer to swing faster—pretty intuitive. That extra speed is supposed to help launch the ball higher and carry it further with less effort. We were confident the Quantum Speed would deliver on that front. However, increased speed can also lead to wider dispersion, over swinging, and a loss of control, especially when you start feeling more confident in your newfound added speed.
My tester felt he was able to maintain the control he would expect from his usual shaft. Was there a tipping point where he tried to swing too hard? Of course. But when he made a normal swing, just slightly faster than his usual 50-gram shaft, his dispersion remained consistent with his expectations. This led to a bit of extra distance that certainly caught his attention for future consideration.
Final Thoughts – UST Mamiya Quantum Speed Shaft Review
The UST Mamiya Quantum Speed shaft is a compelling choice for golfers with slower swing speeds looking to add more distance and launch. Its lightweight design, crafted with high-modulus carbon fibers, increases swing speed and optimizes launch conditions. Our tester found the Quantum Speed delivered a great balance of speed and control. The Quantum Speed kept its stability, even during faster swings. While it may not suit players with higher swing speeds, it excels for those with slower speeds seeking some extra carry and consistency. If you’re looking to generate more distance without sacrificing feel and control, this shaft can help you achieve both.
