XXIO Prime Irons Review

XXIO Prime Irons

The new XXIO Prime irons are a high-end Super Game Improvement (SGI) iron geared toward players with a more moderate swing speed.  XXIO’s goal with the Prime iron is to bring “easy distance and easy accuracy” to help its intended audience get the most out of their game.  To truly put these irons to the test, we worked with two players that are the exact audience XXIO intends to reach.

XXIO Prime 7

How Does it Feel?

Each of our XXIO Prime iron testers said they felt that they could feel the ball “jumping” off of the face of the club.  The good shots for our players felt soft on their hands at impact like they were swinging through air.  For misses, there was definitely a little more “bite” in the hands, but hardly like you’d get from more of a player’s club like a blade.

How Does it Sound?

At impact, the XXIO Prime irons have a fairly loud “cracking” sound for moderate swinging players.  One thing we did notice, however, was that if you’re on the higher end of this swing-speed range, you’ll start to notice a higher-pitched “metallic” type sound (think small fairway woods) at impact.  Typically, the sound from the XXIO Prime would be a little loud for my overall preference, but feedback from our testers was that it was about on par with other clubs that they’ve tested that would fit into the GI/SGI category.

XXIO Prime-5

On-Course Performance

Again, the XXIO Prime irons look to offer “easy distance and easy accuracy.”  For our testers, the Prime did exactly that.  Both players that tested these irons saw about a five yard distance improvement on well struck shots, but also saw a much more desirable, higher launch.  Why?  Because the XXIO Prime irons get in the air VERY easily due to a low Center of Gravity from two tungsten-nickel weights in the sole.  The increased distance is aided by the new Super-Tix PLUS Titanium face designed for faster ball speeds.  Not to mention, the XXIO Prime is super lightweight which can help increase your swing speed as well.

Now, similar to most higher handicaps, the testers for the XXIO Prime typically miss with a slice.  With the XXIO Prime, dispersions were tightened up due to the draw bias of the club.  The fairly large offset, along with a more upright design, helps golfers who typically miss with a slice have a more squared club face at impact.  What does that mean for you?  Straighter shots.  More distance.  Better Scores.

Final Thoughts

There’s no doubt that the XXIO Prime irons are a solid option for a higher handicap golfer with a more moderate swing speed.  They get the ball in the air incredibly easily, they’re long, and they’re forgiving.  But, with that, they also carry a hefty price tag.  However, if they happen to fall within your price range, the XXIO Prime irons are definitely worth considering to invest in to improve your game.

  1. As a recreational golfer for 50+ years (now 67), I just bought a complete set of XXIO Primes including the 11.5 Driver, 3 & 5 Fairway Woods along with 2 Hybrids. What a huge, immediate improvement in my game and control. It’s difficult to describe…you just need to get behind these clubs and feel it. Every claim made by XXIO regarding improved accuracy is spot on! As we age, our vision for continued enjoyment of playing golf seems to fade away…NOT ANYMORE!! XXIO Prime is the answer!!

  2. I just bought xxio after owning 4 other sets of clubs this year. I am a first year golfer and am so impressed with these clubs. All the big names say game changer, these clubs and driver were exactly that.

  3. Regarding my handicap, before XXIO Prime was 18, now is 14. Great gears ever.

Is there much difference from xxii 11 fairway woods and xxii prime fairway woods.

    • Tommy O'Connell

      Hi Michael –

I’m sorry but we have not reviewed the XXIO fairway woods at this time. My apologies.

      Best,
      Tommy

  6. I play left. xxio prime are only available in right. xxio 12 are the only clubs available in left. Do you know how they compare for someone with a higher handicap and slower swing speed?

      Hi Bob –

We haven’t reviewed them but based on the brand, XXIO clubs are geared towards that type of golfer. Thanks!
