Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 Fairway Wood Review

Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 Fairway Wood

Tour Edge has been extremely successful with their fairway wood designs for years – maybe even decades.  That didn’t stop Tour Edge from setting out to make what they believe to be the ultimate player’s fairway wood.  Combining the CBX and CBX T3 models from 2018, along with some new features, they created the Tour-inspired Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 fairway wood.  A compact head with a deeper face and finely-tuned center of gravity (CG) make the CBX 119 an extremely versatile fairway wood for better players.

The Looks

At address the Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 fairway wood has a compact head as advertised.  While the CBX 119 does have a deeper face, it’s still a reasonable size to maintain a compact profile.  The plain black crown and the black face blend nicely to help minimize the profile as well.  On the bottom, you’ll see the Carbon Composite sole as well as the new 15% wider Speed Ramp.  Overall, the CBX 119 fairway wood has a wonderfully simple look and I love it.

How Does it Feel?

Tour Edge used a titanium face on the CBX 119 fairway wood.  They call it the “Beta Ti Cup Face.”  This titanium is used mostly for performance reasons, but it has a very real impact on the feel and sound of the club.  In terms of feel, the CBX 119 fairway wood is extremely smooth and very hot.  The Speed Ramp reduces drag through the turf allowing the club to track nice and clean through impact.  Even when you take a bit of a divot for that higher-launching shot, the club glides through nicely.  There’s a reasonable amount of forgiveness away from the center of the face, but you’ll feel the most heat from the sweet spot (obviously) which really jump.

The CG of the CBX 119 is placed in a higher position and more toward the face mostly to reduce spin.  This also very much affects the balance of the club head during the swing.  While the CG is higher and more toward the face, it still feels fairly neutral.  As a result, the CBX 119 feels very well balanced through the swing giving you precise club head awareness for better control.

How Does it Sound?

Let’s visit that Beta Ti Cup face again.  The Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 fairway wood’s titanium face also gives it a specific sound.  A smooth “neutral” swing has a muted “teek” to it.  (Say that out loud quietly to yourself and it’ll make sense.)  It definitely has a metallic signature to it, but it’s not overwhelming and fairly quiet.  A faster swing gives that “teek” a little more volume but there’s more pop to it.  When you catch one on the screws, the sound is more powerful and lets you know you really stepped on it.

Much like the CBX 119 hybrid, my biggest takeaway for “Performance” was the Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 fairway wood’s versatility.  Part of that versatility starts with the stock Project X shaft options from Tour Edge.  You can currently choose between EvenFlow White T1100, Black, Blue, Red, and the HZRDUS Black Smoke.  I went with the EvenFlow White for more range in the new 3 wood gap I’m trying to fill in my bag.

Bill, why is there a second set of data in this section?  I’m glad you asked.  Tour Edge heavily touts the CBX 119 as a “spin killer” and strong in the wind, but my first set of data wouldn’t necessarily indicate that.  What I found was that the CBX 119’s versatility really allowed you to do everything with it.  The first data set is the average of all my test data.  This includes everything from high fades with soft landings, to piercing bullets intended to roll out on a tight fairway with a short landing zone.  The second set is the average of just “the bullets.”

Sure, if you had an “Iron Byron” machine, you could say “yep, it just hits this one shot.”  My experience, however, was the CBX 119 is a Swiss Army Knife of a fairway wood that can do it all.  Players that have command of their swings will be able to take spin off and fight through the wind or add distance.  Similarly, those same players will be able to put some spin on it for quicker stops when they go for those par 5s in two.

Final Thoughts

The Tour Edge Exotics CBX 119 family from this season is fantastic.  Not only is the CBX 119 fairway wood versatile but it’s so much easier to hit than most other fairway woods in its category.  While powerful in the wind and capable of some low spin numbers, the ability to control a wide range of shots at greater distances is the greatest benefit.  Those long par 5s and tight tee shots suddenly seem a lot more playable to me now.  Time will tell if the CBX 119 makes the difference in my 3 wood spot!
