ECCO S-Three Golf Shoe Review

ECCO S-Three Golf Shoe

Taking off-course looks and blending them into a high-quality, on-course spikeless golf shoe has been in ECCO’s wheelhouse for years now. Their latest hybrid spikeless golf shoe is the ECCO S-Three. Designed for elite performance and comfort, the S-Three utilizes premium materials and technology to deliver on the golf course. As a player that prefers spikes in my golf shoes, I was extremely impressed with this shoe. Let me tell you why.

The Looks

While I wouldn’t personally call the ECCO S-Three a shoe with “away from the course walking around looks”, it’s does a great job nailing a look that’s appropriate to wear anywhere within the golf club’s property. Whether you’re out playing 18 holes, or heading into the clubhouse for a drink or meal, the S-Three fits the bill. There are also four different colorways to choose from. The “magnet” pictured here is the most conservative (in my opinion) but tasteful, while the other three colorways introduce a little more color and flair. Regardless, there’s a good choice for anyone that’s into this shoe.

Comfort Level

Comfort has been the major calling card of ECCO golf shoes for years. Generally speaking, I feel getting comfort right in a golf shoe is somewhat of a tough task. They have to be cushioned enough to wear for a long walk, yet firm enough to support your feet during a golf swing. They have to be breathable, yet somehow keep your feet dry. You get the point. The S-Three thrives at combining all of these elements.

ECCO utilized what they call “Zonal Fluidform” in their midsole to create three different levels of rigidity in three different zones. In short, this design makes the shoe feel firm where you need it to, but also soft in the right areas. On top of the midsole is an “open-cell OrthoLite” insole. This insole adds the layer of cushioning needed to dial in long-term comfort.

In regards to using premium materials, the S-Three is made of a soft calf Nappa leather and Gore-Tex. The Nappa leather is extremely soft and comfortable while also durable and breathable. The Gore-Tex is 100% waterproof to keep your feet dry but is also breathable so your feet don’t overheat during your round. More importantly, so the shoes don’t stink over time.

On-Course Performance

We’ve generally covered the ECCO S-Three’s comfort which is also a crucial part of its performance. If your golf shoes are uncomfortable, just forget about it. Nothing else they do on the course matters. Like I said, the S-Three is impressively comfortable.

My first round in the S-Three was after a week of much needed downpours in the Chicago area. The course should have dried at least a little bit, especially given how thirsty the course should have been to soak it all up, but it was GROSS out there. With its use of Gore-Tex, however, my feet stayed perfectly dry and comfortable the entire round.

To the point above regarding the moisture, as soon as I stepped foot in the fairway of the first hole, I thought “oh man, it’s so wet, dumb move wearing spikeless shoes.” I began mentally preparing for a long day of severe traction issues. To my pleasant surprise, I didn’t experience a single slipping issue all day. The E-DTS traction system, made up of 100 TPU traction bars, apparently produces 800 “traction angles” to ensure strong traction. Between the E-DTS system and the aforementioned Zonal Fluidform midsole, the connection to the ground is excellent.

Final Thoughts – ECCO S-Three Golf Shoe

Some would say that ECCO was the first to deliver a truly hybrid spikeless shoe that legitimately performed on the course and truly functioned well off of it. ECCO has a very loyal following in general, but they have an especially rabid base of loyal spikeless players. Those faithful will surely love the S-Three, and so might other players looking for a new premium spikeless golf shoe. Either way, ECCO delivered a great hybrid shoe and I was extremely impressed with the S-Three out on the golf course.
