TecTecTec ULT-X Rangefinder Review

TecTecTec ULT-X Rangefinder

TecTecTec has established itself as one of the best quality value rangefinder companies on the market.  Quality construction, durability, and strong technology at an affordable price have come to be standard fare for the brand.  The TecTecTec ULT-X rangefinder is one of their latest high-end models packed with advance features like vibration lock and slope technology at a price of only $248.99.

Out of the Box

I’ve been quoted as saying, “when I buy a rangefinder, I want to open the box, throw the battery in and start shooting distances.”  Depending on the rangefinder, this should be fairly doable in this day and age.  The TecTecTec ULT-X does this pretty well.  In my case, I had to switch my measurement unit from meters to yards, that’s it.  This was easy to do by pressing the Mode button for 3 seconds.  The only other setting you have to choose is what mode to play in: Normal, Scan, and Pinseeker.

I’m a big fan of the push/pull slope face plate!  By pulling the face plate forward you enable slope mode on the ULT-X.  A simple pull forward is all it takes rather than navigating a series of button pushes.  You will notice the bright yellow ring as an indicator so there’s no confusion in tournament play.  To turn it off, just push it back in and you’re tournament legal.

TecTecTec ULT-X Features

There is quite a bit going on in the TecTecTec ULT-X rangefinder for only $248.99!  First, the ULT-X features TecTecTec’s Target Lock Technology (TLT).  This allows the ULT-X to instantly measure a flag up to 450 yards away and a hazard up to 1000 yards away.  Pair this with the 6x magnification of the ULT-X’s lens and picking out important targets on the hole is a breeze.  Additionally, there are three different scanning modes to choose from.

M1: Scan Mode

The ULT-X’s first is Scan Mode.  In addition to just shooting a single distance to one target, you can hold down the power button and scan across an area to get distances to various points.  This is useful for a scenario such as you first measure distance to a pin, but then you scan to find how far you have to hit it to carry that front bunker, and how far the right center of the green is for your safe shot.  Just hold the power button and scan for all of those distances in one shot.

M2: Pin Mode w/ Vibration Alert

The second mode is Pin Mode with Vibration Alert.  Target Lock technology makes the ULT-X vibrate when you lock onto your chosen target.  This takes a little getting used to, but the instructions explain how to use this feature.  Pin Mode is ideal when the flag might have a lot of trees or other features behind it.  This mode will detect the closest target and lock in the distance for you.

M3: PinSlope Mode w/ Vibration Alert

Last but not least is the slope feature – PinSlope Mode.  This mode is the same as M2 above, but the ULT-X can measure slope, which is the adjusted distance to a target depending on how far above or below you it is.  There will be a small graphic when you look through the lens indicating downhill or uphill to tell you how much slope the rangefinder is accounting for.  Furthermore, the ULT-X will show you the actual distance as well as the slope-adjusted distance so you know both numbers.

ULT-X Performance 13

On-Course Performance

From a general perspective, the TecTecTec ULT-X performs as well as any other big name rangefinder on the market.  The distances are accurate, and as mentioned above, there are plenty of features to choose from.  Regardless of which mode you use, the ULT-X will pick up the distances quickly so you aren’t wasting time on the course.  Make sure you adjust the eye piece accordingly as well.  This will dial in the clarity of the image for you.

Let’s discuss accuracy a little bit further.  TecTecTec claims the ULT-X measures with +/- .3 yard accuracy up to 300 yards, +/- .8 yards from 300-600 yards, and +/- 1 yard from 600-1000 yards.  Pretty good for $249…  Admittedly, I’m putting trust in this data, but it matches up fairly well with my other rangefinders.  The only way to know for certain would be to get a measuring wheel and walk it off.

Given the amount of technology TecTecTec packs into such an affordable price point, it’s reasonable to expect some small sacrifices somewhere.  In regards to the ULT-X, the optics are the one area that’s “just ok.”  That said, the optics are still perfectly fine.  Personally, I’d rather have the additional features, strong performance, and adequate optics at this price as opposed to premium optics but no features and poor performance.  Again, this is a more than fair price to pay to have all of this tech in such an affordable package.

Final Thoughts 12

Final Thoughts – TecTecTec ULT-X Rangefinder

One thing I’ve learned about rangefinders is that I don’t need them to fly me to the moon, I just need to them to reliably tell me accurate distances.  That’s it.  Sure, I’ll take some bonus items like slope measurements and target locks too.  TecTecTec gives you all the premium features you need at an affordable price point that performs well.  I know I was slightly critical of the optics, but they are still strong enough that I would recommend the ULT-X as a leading option to a player that’s budget conscious and still wants all the bells and whistles in their rangefinder.
